New logo – new look

I’ve been working on a new look for the SWOP Forum site (and experimenting with polling)

The Business Committee has decided, for a number of reasons, to change the SWOP logo to something simpler and cleaner. Due to the relative starkness of the new logo I felt it necessary to change the theme of this website at the same time.

The theme I originally chose was called, aptly enough, ‘Plane’:

SWOP - Plane theme blog theme – Plane

At Wednesday’s meeting I received some useful feedback on this theme. The two main points were: the banner is far too large (which is true – the screen is really just made of banner); and the menu bar is almost unnoticeable up at the top of the screen. Following this I’ve been investigating new themes today. I tried out a few before settling on this one. It’s called Sequential:

SWOP - Sequential theme blog theme – Sequential

I really like this. It’s clean and unfussy, elegant and professional. It echoes the simplicity of the new logo but has a…

#swop25th Anniversary AGM – a brief report

My ‘report’ on SWOP’s 25th Anniversary AGM

SWOP Forum

This afternoon SWOP held it’s 25th Anniversary AGM at Augustine United Church, George IV Bridge, Edinburgh. A gratifyingly large number of SWOP members, old and new, turned up to mark the occasion.

SWOP – originally the Scottish Working Group on Official Publications – held its first meeting in 1989. A few years later the first edition of the Directory of Official Publications in Scotland was published. I got a little geeky thrill when Fiona showed us a copy of this, since I spent a fair bit of last year building the current version of the Directory which lives on this site.

Once the official AGM business had been…

Time travel – part 2

I’ve recently spent a lot of time developing and enhancing the SWOP Blog so it can become the group’s primary public site. A major piece of work was building a new home for SWOP’s unique ‘Directory of Official Publications in Scotland‘, then transferring, checking and updating all directory entries from the old website.

I created ‘Events’ listings, added a Tag cloud and Twitter feed – and my recent #happygeek moment was setting up new ‘pages’ and figuring out how to re-direct posts to them via the ‘Category’ function. Such fun! Finally, I added a Welcome page and re-jigged the site to make that the new Home page – all done.

I used the same template/theme for SWOP Blog as I chose for A Very Fine Library. Initially, this was for reasons of expediency (see here) but I’m so happy with the look and functionality of the site that I decided to stick with it.

So pleased am I, in fact, that I started wishing I’d made some ‘before and after’ pics to remind me of the changes. It occurred to me to check whether the Internet Archive WayBackMachine had collected the site in the past…  To my surprise and pleasure I found that it had!

It was gratifying to note that, in the past, SWOP Blog had been harvested only 3 times from 2011 to 2013.  Since I started tinkering it’s been captured that many times in just 7 months   🙂

It’s even more gratifying to see that my own little blog is being captured now too!

I spent a wee bit of today revamping and reshaping the SWOP Blog.  Yes, it does look a little familiar, doesn’t it?  The thing is, I didn’t have much time and I knew this template would support the features I wanted to add.  So…

I needed something to present at our AGM on Wednesday.  I hope to convince my fellow SWOP members of the joys of social media and the better use we could be making of the blog…  I do hope they like it…
